Squirrel Babies Season
Squirrel Babies Season
Gray squirrel babies season is almost upon us. In the Charlotte, NC area gray squirrels have two litters of baby squirrels a year. The first batch of squirrel babies are born in February around Valentines Day. Squirrels nesting in an attic typically have between 3-5 baby squirrels. It is best to make sure your home is secure and any unwanted guests have been removed before the squirrel babies are born. If you procrastinate and end up with a nest of squirrels in the attic, this can really complicate the squirrel removal process.
Once the baby squirrels are born they will be nursed by mom for up to 4 months. This means the number of squirrels in the attic not only has increased but the chances of a future squirrel infestation will increase as well. Squirrels are rodents and they will imprint on your attic. Living in the attic in most cases is a learned behavior. Once a squirrel is raised from birth in an attic they will come back to the same place every year to either take refuge from the frigid temperatures or to set up a nursery.
Squirrel babies in an attic will have to be physically removed if they aren’t more than a couple of months old. This means that babies will use the attic as a bathroom for the next weeks until the mother decides it is time to show them around outside. If adult female squirrel is sealed out during squirrel babies season, she will try her hardest to get back inside. This could cause significant damage to the house and also if the babies are in a wall or an inaccessible area you could end up with dead baby squirrels.
